Celebrating the life of
Pomposa Noemi Alvarez
September 30, 1925 - October 21, 2017
Savannah – Mrs. Pomposa Noemi Alvarez, 92, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2017 at her home in Savannah, GA.
She was born on September 30, 1925 in Havana, Cuba to the late Sabino Doble Suárez and Flora Julia Enguita Suárez and immigrated to the United States in March of 1962, with her two sons, ahead of her husband, Dr. Manuel L. Alvarez. In 1964, Dr. Alvarez joined his wife and family in Miami, Florida, moving to Savannah in 1966. Never shying from a challenge as evidenced by her time in the U.S. without her husband, she diligently worked through the application process successfully becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen with the support of her family. As a wife and mother to four children, she was the consummate homemaker caring for her family with the love, strength and compassion that only a mother could provide and inasmuch as she loved her family, she was also a generous and welcoming hostess always entertaining friends with a warm smile and kind heart.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, her children, Manuel L. (Mike) Alvarez of Richmond Hill, Jose A. (Deborah) Alvarez of Hoschton, and Edward (Lissa) Alvarez of Pooler, her grandchildren, Michael L. Alvarez of Atlanta, Christopher P. (Stephanie) Alvarez of Vidalia, Brandi Grubb of Augusta, Christina Alvarez of Londonderry, NH, Stephen J. Alvarez of Richmond Hill, and Conner W. Woerner of Duluth, three great-grandchildren, Ashley Grubb, Cameron and Savannah Alvarez and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by parents, her brothers, Enrique Suárez and Candito Suárez and her daughter, Lizette M. (Lisa) Woerner.
The family will be having a private celebration of her life.
